Flight Options places order for $1 billion in new business jets

At the same time Flight Options has a new owner, it already has plans to expand. The Richmond Heights private jet company has ordered nearly $1 billion worth of Phenom 300 light jets, to be delivered starting in 2009. Flight Options, which offers fractional-share ownership of private jets, said it will add at least 100 jets to its fleet of 130 luxury aircraft. It flies locally out of the Cuyahoga County Airport in Richmond Heights and employs more than 1,500, including about 500 locally.   The jet order is a sign that Flight Options' new owner, H.I.G. Capital of Miami, is committed to the growth of Flight Options, Chief Executive S. Michael Scheeringa said in a statement. Flight Options was sold by Raytheon Co. to H.I.G., a private equity firm, which closed on the purchase Friday. The fleet expansion could lead the company to add employees in the future, company spokeswoman Cindi Deutschman-Ruiz said.

Excerpt from Feb. 27, 2007 Highland Heights Council Meeting:

Law Director Paluf reported at the request of the Mayor and along with Council President Murphy he attended a meeting today in Willoughby Hills regarding the proposed airport expansion. The expansion would entail tunneling Bishop Road for about 800 feet. The people from Richmond Heights and Willoughby hills who were there were against it.

Council President Murphy added that they have looked at 36 different proposals. Several involve different aspects of the tunneling under Bishop Road in Highland Heights and Willoughby hills. She advised this is a conceptual state and is called the master plan stage. There seems to be a lot of opposition. They invited the County Representatives to come to a Council Meeting and present their concept to us. Mrs. Murphy stated it is important that this community be a part of their planning.

Mr. Hargate stated he did not support the expansion proposal. He stated the city should coordinate their efforts with the Cities of Willoughby Hills and Richmond Heights and advised there have been good results in the past when they coordinated their efforts.

News Herald article, January 26, 2007: Mayor wants resolution to proposed runway expansion

Mayor Kenneth Lorenz met Thursday, January 24th, 2007, with Kevin M. Delaney, appointed as Cuyahoga County Airport Manager just last Thursday, January 18th. Mayor Lorenz recently received phone calls from concerned Willoughby Hills residents on Tall Tree Trail and Canterbury Court, and took the initiative to meet with Delaney to discuss airport news. Delaney indicated that airport officials, Cuyahoga County Commissioners and the FAA had been in discussion regarding 36 potential scenarios for the future of the airport.

Delaney indicated that all facts and figures point towards airport expansion. Based on recommendations, the airport will most likely increase the length of the runway into Willoughby Hills by 900 feet, and extend the safety zone into Willoughby Hills by an additional 1000 feet. Expansion would go into the Airport Greens Golf Course and beyond. The FAA, Cuyahoga County and airport would most likely have to purchase residential property to accomplish this. No definite plans have been undertaken, but it is estimated that purchase of ten to fifteen homes would be necessary to carry out the expansion.

The airport would also consider a Bishop Road underpass, where road traffic would go through a tunnel underpass, allowing the runway traffic to go above ground.

Delaney is quick to point out that all expansion plans are subject to a lengthy process. An environmental impact study could take up to two years, followed by a noise abatement study which could take well over a year. Adding several years of planning phases could push final construction off up to ten into the future.
